VoyageHacks did not test the card; it worked through the published terms, and the profiles below are worked examples with disclosed assumptions.
The Platinum in 60 seconds
What’s changing with the Platinum in 2026
Anyone reading older reviews is working with the wrong numbers. The key changes, with dates:
| Date | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Fee €60 a month instead of the earlier €55, credits reshuffled to €650 a year | product page |
| 2026 | Statement credit direct from Amex (up to €340) instead of points; points only via referral | product page |
| 09/30/2026 | last day with access to Lufthansa lounges, worldwide | Amex Lounge Finder |
| 10/01/2026 to 03/31/2027 | Lounge on the Go: 6 x €20 in Frankfurt T1 and Munich T2 | offer terms |
| 10/01/2026 | LODENFREY credit reportedly requires a €200+ purchase | announced, not yet in the terms as of 09/14 |
| through 12/31/2026 | SIXT ONE Platinum and SIXT ride: existing customers must re-register | Amex Platinum overview |
On the LODENFREY minimum: the published offer terms still say “up to €50 per half-year” with no minimum purchase as of September 14, 2026. The €200 threshold comes from travel-portal reports; plan for it as a precaution.

| Cash | 4%, minimum €5; up to €1,500 in 7 days in Germany |
American Express advertises a “total value of up to €2,280” a year. €650 of that is fixed credits; the remaining up to €1,630 is what Amex projects from assumed hotel nights, rental car days and trips. That figure is marketing, not a credit to your account.
The net math: three travel profiles
The table uses the official credits. The assumptions are in the column; the lounge value is deliberately set at €25 per visit, a bit under the €30 Amex charges for every additional Priority Pass guest.
| Frequent flyer | City traveler | Occasional traveler | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assumption | 12 round trips, mostly as a couple | 4 trips, 8 hotel nights | 2 vacations |
| Card fee | -€720 | -€720 | -€720 |
| Credits used | +€650 (all four) | +€350 (travel, dining) | +€150 (dining) |
| Lounge value (€25 per visit) | +€600 (24 visits) | +€200 (8 visits) | +€100 (4 visits) |
| Points (€1,500 a month, 0.5 cents) | +€90 | +€90 | +€90 |
| Foreign currency (10% of spend, 2%) | -€36 | -€36 | -€36 |
| Result per year | +€584 | -€116 | -€416 |
Anyone using the travel and dining credit comes out ahead from around 13 lounge visits a year. The welcome bonus isn’t counted in the table, since it’s only available in the first year. Run your own numbers:

Lounges: what remains from October 2026
Lounge access is the main reason most cardholders get the Platinum. From October 1, 2026:
- Centurion Lounges: visits are not limited, per Amex, one companion free under conditions.
- Priority Pass Prestige: for the main and Platinum supplementary card, one free guest each, every additional one €30.
- The 50-visit limit: per the price schedule, at most 50 Priority Pass visits per calendar year combined across all cards, guests included.
- Lufthansa lounges: only through September 30, 2026.
- Lounge on the Go: 6 x €20 in food-and-shopping credit for Frankfurt T1 and Munich T2 through March 31, 2027.
All the rules, worked examples on the 50-visit limit and the comparison with other Amex cards are in the guide Amex Platinum Lounges.
Hotel and rental car status
The Platinum skips the nights you’d otherwise need for status. Per Amex, guests normally reach Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite “only from 25 nights,” ALL Accor Gold after “30 nights or 7,000 status points.”
| Program | Status | One benefit per Amex |
|---|---|---|
| Hilton Honors | Gold | daily credit or breakfast |
| Marriott Bonvoy | Gold Elite | late check-out until 2 p.m. |
| ALL Accor | Gold | room guarantee up to 3 days before arrival |
| MeliáRewards | Gold | late check-out until 4 p.m. at city hotels |
| Radisson Rewards | Premium | up to 20% off |
| GHA DISCOVERY | Platinum | late check-out until 3 p.m. |
| SIXT | ONE Platinum | upgrade one vehicle group |

The four credits: how to actually get the €650 out
- €200 online travel credit: only when booking through American Express Online Travel. Compare the price with a direct booking first; a more expensive rate eats up the credit.
- €150 dining credit: only at participating restaurants. Which cities have a good selection is in the guide Amex dining credit by city.
- €200 SIXT ride: only for trips booked through SIXT ride. Existing customers must, per Amex, re-register by 12/31/2026 via the Amex Experiences App.
- €100 LODENFREY: €50 per half-year, main card only, only for orders shipped within Germany. From October 2026, per reports, only on a purchase of at least €200.
The honest assessment: most people use the travel and dining credit without any detour. SIXT ride and LODENFREY require you to buy something you might not otherwise have bought.
Insurance: what the Platinum covers
The amounts come from American Express’s price and service schedule. Per the terms, most travel insurance only applies “when paying with the card,” meaning if you pay for the trip with the Platinum.
| Insurance | Coverage per Amex |
|---|---|
| Overseas travel health insurance | trips up to 120 days, deductible at least €100, at most €500 per person |
| Trip cancellation and curtailment | up to €6,000 per person and trip |
| Baggage | up to €3,000 per trip, of which €750 for cash and documents |
| Flight delay | €200 from 4 hours’ delay |
| Baggage delay | €400 from 4 hours, another €400 after 48 hours |
| Rental car | collision damage waiver up to €75,000, liability up to €750,000 (USA $1,000,000) |
| Overseas personal liability | up to €1,000,000 per claim |
| Travel accident | up to €75,000 |
| European roadside assistance | applies even without card use, from 50 km from home |
Who exactly is covered (partner, children, grandchildren) is set out in the insurance terms; Amex only describes it in general terms on the overview page. Read them before a major trip.
Welcome bonus: statement credit, points, or an upgrade
| Route | Bonus | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Direct at American Express | up to €340 in statement credit | €6,000 plus €4,000 in spend in 6 months |
| Referral | up to 85,000 Membership Rewards points | same spend, hold the card 12 months |
| Upgrade from Blue, American Express Card or Gold | up to 95,000 points | card held for at least 10 months |
At 0.5 cents a point (vouchers), 85,000 points are worth €425, often more via airline transfers. What a point is worth with which partner is in the Membership Rewards guide. The links on this page are my referral links; I also earn points for a successful referral.
The honest downsides
- Over 1,550 lounges, Centurion with no visit limit
- €650 a year in credits for travel, dining, SIXT ride and LODENFREY
- Six hotel statuses and three rental car statuses with no nights required
- Trip cancellation up to €6,000 and rental car collision waiver up to €75,000
- Up to 85,000 points bonus through referral
- €720 a year regardless of how much you use
- Credits tied to partners and only worth something with active use
- No Lufthansa lounges from October 2026, Priority Pass capped at 50 visits
- 2% foreign transaction fee and 4% for cash
- Not accepted everywhere in Germany
Three points deserve a second look:
- Foreign currency: even the most expensive Amex charges 2%. On a long-haul trip with €3,000 in spending, that’s €60.
- Acceptance: bakeries, markets and post offices often don’t take Amex. Which merchants do is in the guide Amex acceptance in Germany.
- Charge card: the entire monthly spend is collected by direct debit; there’s no installment option.
Who the Platinum suits, and what the alternatives are
- Get it if you fly ten or more times a year, usually with a companion, travel through hubs with Priority Pass or Centurion lounges, and would spend the four credits anyway.
- Skip it if you wanted the Platinum mainly for Lufthansa lounges in Frankfurt or Munich.
- Alternative with car and taxi: the Gold at €240 with SIXT and FREENOW credit.
- Alternative purely for points: the American Express Card at €60, free the following year at €9,000 in spend.
- Alternative for the self-employed: the Business Platinum at €850 with 58 days to pay.
The direct comparison with the Gold is worked out in Amex Platinum vs. Gold; all six cards are in the Amex card comparison for Germany. How to apply: Apply for Amex.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Amex Platinum worth it despite the annual fee?
For frequent flyers, yes; for occasional travelers, no. The Amex Platinum costs €720 a year and gives back €650 in credits if you use all four; that leaves around €70 net for over 1,550 lounges, six hotel statuses and the insurance package. If you only use the travel and dining credit, you pay €370 net. That pays off from around ten flights a year; below that, the Gold at €240 or the American Express Card at €60 is the better choice. As of September 14, 2026.
How high is the Amex Platinum’s annual fee?
In Germany, €60 a month, so €720 a year (as of September 2026). Per the price schedule, an annual charge of €720 is also possible. Against that stand €200 a year in online travel credit, €150 in dining credit, €200 in SIXT ride credit and €100 in LODENFREY shopping credit, €650 combined.
What lounge access does the Amex Platinum offer from October 2026?
Over 1,550 lounges at more than 500 airports, including Centurion Lounges with no visit limit and a Priority Pass Prestige membership with at most 50 visits per calendar year combined across all cards and guests. Each cardholder gets one free guest, every additional one costs €30. Lufthansa lounges are only included through September 30, 2026; as a replacement, there are six €20 vouchers for Frankfurt T1 and Munich T2 through March 2027.
What hotel status do I get with the Amex Platinum?
Six statuses with no nights required: Hilton Honors Gold, Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, ALL Accor Gold, MeliáRewards Gold, Radisson Rewards Premium and GHA DISCOVERY Platinum. Plus Avis President’s Club, Hertz Five Star and SIXT ONE Platinum. Each status has to be activated once in your Amex online account, and it also applies to the Platinum supplementary card.
How high is the Amex Platinum’s welcome bonus?
Directly from American Express there’s up to €340 in statement credit: €160 after €6,000 in spend in the first 6 months plus €180 after a further €4,000. Through a referral, the same spend thresholds instead earn up to 85,000 Membership Rewards points. Anyone who has held a Blue Card, American Express Card or Gold for at least 10 months gets up to 95,000 points on upgrading. The bonus is only for new customers without a primary Platinum card in the last 18 months.
What insurance does the Amex Platinum include?
Per the price schedule, among others: overseas travel health insurance for trips up to 120 days, trip cancellation and curtailment cover up to €6,000 per person and trip, baggage cover up to €3,000, rental car collision damage waiver up to €75,000, overseas personal liability up to €1,000,000 and European roadside assistance. Most travel insurance only applies if you pay for the trip with the card.
What is the biggest downside of the Amex Platinum?
That the €650 in credits only count if you actively use them, and that they’re tied to specific partners: SIXT ride, LODENFREY, American Express Online Travel and participating restaurants. On top of that there’s a 2% foreign transaction fee, 4% (minimum €5) for cash, and acceptance gaps in Germany. And from October 2026, Lufthansa lounge access is gone.
Verdict
The Platinum isn’t a card for everyone in 2026, but for frequent flyers with a companion it remains the strongest travel card in Germany, even without Lufthansa lounges. Do the math honestly with the credits you’ll really use: if the calculator above comes out positive, apply through my referral link for up to 85,000 points instead of €340 in statement credit. If it comes out negative, the Gold at €240 or the American Express Card at €60 is the smarter choice.
